Palbit advances industrial decarbonization with a new solar power plant
On World Environment Day and in the year we celebrate our 110th anniversary, Palbit is taking a significant step toward decarbonizing its industrial operations.
There are times when a number tells a story better than any description. That number is 53%. It represents the percentage of total electricity consumption at our industrial facility in Albergaria-a-Velha that will now be covered by solar energy, following the completion of the new on-site power generation facility (UPAC) that we inaugurated today.
The new installation complements the existing UPAC, bringing the total to approximately 5,400 photovoltaic panels distributed across the factory roof and adjacent land, with a total installed capacity of 2.77 MWp. Together, the two installations produce approximately 3.8 million kWh annually - more than half of the energy we need to manufacture our tools, generated from the sun.
The environmental impact is equally significant: we prevent the emission of approximately 1,792 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent per year, which, according to the methodology of the NGO Iniciativa Verde, is equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of more than 11,100 trees.
“In the industry we operate in, technical excellence is a constant. We apply that same standard to the way we manage our energy. Reaching a point where more than half of our electricity consumption is covered by renewable sources is an achievement we are proud of,” said Jorge Ferreira, CEO of Palbit.
This investment is not a one-off initiative. It is part of a long-term commitment to energy efficiency and the decarbonization of our operations, gradually replacing fossil fuel consumption with locally generated energy from renewable sources. It is a commitment that, 110 years on, we continue to pursue with the same determination with which we have always tackled the technical challenges of modern machining.
