Nickel-based superalloys are valued for their exceptional high-temperature strength, structural reliability, and corrosion and fatigue resistance, making them ideal for engineering components subjected to high thermomechanical loads, especially in the aerospace industry. However, their remarkable properties result in reduced machinability, limiting processing efficiency. Challenges include high cutting resistance, a tendency to work harden, abrasive carbide precipitates, and extreme temperatures at the tool-workpiece interface.

Furthermore, low thermal conductivity hinders heat dissipation, while the material's high weldability causes built-up edges to form on cutting tools, further complicating machining operations and requiring advanced cutting technologies to improve performance and efficiency.

Ceramic Grades

To meet the challenges of machining advanced materials, ceramic cutting tools have been developed and are currently considered one of the most effective solutions. Their excellent heat resistance and chemical stability, combined with exceptional hardness and wear resistance, make them highly suitable for demanding applications.

Composed primarily of alumina (Al₂O₃) or silicon nitride (Si₃N₄), ceramic tools are tailored to meet specific requirements through the use of different grades and additives. These tools excel in high-speed machining and extreme environments, offering superior performance and a high material removal rate compared to traditional materials, making them the preferred choice for demanding applications.

Palbit offers a special ceramic grade, PCN010 , which can be coated or uncoated and is ideal for machining nickel-based alloys such as Inconel. The PCN010 grade, with its SiAlON composition, enables high stock removal rates to be achieved under extreme operating conditions, minimizing wear in roughing applications. SiAlON ceramic grades are characterized by their exceptional hardness and extreme wear resistance, combined with high chemical stability.

When PCN010 grade is coated, it becomes PCNY10 grade, providing several significant benefits. These include easy wear identification, a reduced coefficient of friction, reduced material adhesion and more stable wear progression.

Top Coating (TiN)

Doped Layer

Increases thermal stability, combining high hardness and good resistance to oxidation.

Internal Coating (TiAIN)
